Custom Fitted Mouthguards

Playing sports poses the risk of damaging your teeth, which can lead to expensive and painful dental work. Suncoast Mouth Guards make fully articulated (plaster moulds are taken of your top and bottom teeth) custom fit mouthguards that:

  • are a better, more accurate fit than a 'boil and bite' guard;
  • have better coverage of the teeth;
  • have improved airflow to assist breathing during exertion;
  • are far more comfortable; and
  • offer high absorption of shock experienced by a blow to the face, which otherwise may result in a mouth injury.

Benefits of Using a Mouthguard

Mouthguards are an essential protective device for anyone participating in contact sports or physical activities. They offer several benefits, including:

  • Protection: Mouthguards act as a cushion for your teeth, gums and jaws, absorbing the impact of any blows or collisions and reducing the risk of dental injuries.
  • Comfort: Mouthguards are custom-made to fit your teeth and mouth, ensuring maximum comfort and ease of breathing during physical activities.
  • Concussion prevention: A properly fitting mouthguard can prevent or reduce the severity of a concussion by absorbing the impact of a blow to the chin or lower jaw.
  • Improved performance: Mouthguards have been shown to improve an athlete's performance by increasing their confidence, reducing their risk of injury and allowing them to focus on their game or activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who needs a mouthguard?

    It’s recommended by the Australian Dental Association for anybody participating in contact sport to wear a mouthguard. For example, if you play sports like rugby, AFL, hockey or boxing, a mouthguard is essential. With frequent collisions, ensuring your teeth are protected properly is often a requirement for participation. It’s also recommended to wear a mouthguard for other sports like netball, soccer, and basketball, as although these are technically non-contact sports, they often result in accidental collisions that can cause significant dental problems for unprotected teeth.

  • How do mouthguards work?

    A custom-fitted mouthguard will absorb and spread the force of any impact. Unlike ‘boil and bite’ mouthguards which don’t hold their shape well, a custom-fitted mouthguard is designed to fit your bite profile perfectly. This means they are not only more effective but they last longer too. How are custom mouthguards made?

    Our Dental Prosthetist and dental technicians will take an impression of your mouth and bite, which is then used to develop a plaster model. From this plaster mould, we’ll then manufacture a mouthguard designed specifically for your mouth. As children grow it’s important to ensure you have a new mouthguard made as new teeth come in.

  • How do I know if my mouthguard fits properly?

    Your mouthguard should fit snugly over your teeth and not move around in your mouth. It should also cover your upper teeth and provide adequate protection for your gums and the soft tissues of your mouth. When you first receive your mouthguard, we will ensure that it fits properly and is comfortable to wear. If you experience any discomfort or notice any movement while wearing your mouthguard, please contact us to schedule an adjustment.
