How To Get Used To Eating With Your New Denture

Jan 28, 2022

Dentures are artificial teeth consisting of manufactured materials. Plastic moulds are custom-made to fit your mouth, but they can feel awkward and uncomfortable for several weeks as you get used to them. The denture may slip a bit during this adjustment period because you will produce more saliva, which may cause sore spots.

Getting used to living with dentures, which alter the position of your tongue, lips, and cheeks, can take a little time. As your dentures settle in, there are several things you can do to minimise these effects.

TIPS FOR SOFT FOODS

When you wear new dentures, the first rule of thumb is to be careful about food. Eat soft foods that won’t require you to chew excessively. Any crunchy food will cause undue stress on gum tissues, causing irritation and inflammation.

Pureed foods provide you with the nutrition you need without damaging your gums or straining your jaw.

You should avoid eating hot foods that can burn your mouth. The insulating effect of the dentures will make it harder to judge temperatures. Before putting hot foods in your mouth, test them on your lips. Don’t hold liquids in your mouth and avoid spicy foods.

TIPS FOR SOLID FOOD

Cut your food into tiny pieces when you start eating solid foods. It would help if you also considered how you chew and how fast you eat. For the best eating experience, plan plenty of time for your meal and sit down. Rushing through a meal while dining on the go may result in pain and denture slippage.

EATING AFTER HEALING

Take things slowly and remember that you can expect some soreness during the adjustment period as your jaw muscles adjust to fitting your dentures. However, if the pain does not disappear or other problems occur, you should tell your dentist.

Almost anything you eat will be fine once you have adjusted to wearing dentures. Nevertheless, some foods will always be challenging to eat, such as those that are hard, sticky, or have small pieces of hard material.

Having just received new dentures makes eating a healthy diet tricky, but if you follow our tips, plus a little time and patience, you will be able to chew and eat normally in a few weeks.

However, if you experience problems such as mouth sores that do not heal or ongoing pain, or if you simply cannot seem to grasp the concept of chewing with dentures, you can ask your dentist for help.
