Dentures are often the best solution for tooth loss. But there are many types of dentures available, and which type is right for you will depend on your specific needs. It’s important to consult your dentist first before deciding which type to choose. However, here are the most common types:

FULL DENTURES

Full dentures are the most common type of dentures and can replace all of the teeth in your mouth. They have a metal or acrylic base that fits onto your gums and attaches to your jawbone with metal clasps and comes in many different forms. Partial dentures get inserted into available spaces left by extracted teeth, but full dentures must be specially made for each patient. Full dentures generally require greater adjustments than partial ones because they must fit more securely into place.

PARTIAL DENTURES

Partial dentures are removable, which means you can take them out when you aren’t wearing them. They help to fill in gaps in your smile caused by missing teeth and help improve the appearance of your smile. They are usually made of acrylic, a plastic resin material that is strong and durable. Partial dentures tend to replace one or more teeth on either side of an arch (upper or lower), called a segment.

CUSTOM DENTURES

Custom dentures are the most expensive type of denture, but they can also provide you with a more comfortable fit. Custom dentures come from a mould of your mouth and teeth so that they fit perfectly in your mouth. These types of dentures are usually made out of acrylic resin, which is lightweight and durable. An orthodontist will adjust to ensure that the fit is correct before sending them to be cast at a dental lab.

SNAP-IN DENTURES

Snap-in dentures are a variation of regular complete dentures. They’re more expensive than regular complete dentures but they’re easier to remove and clean, which means they can be more comfortable. The snap-in feature lets you take them out without completely removing them from your mouth, so you can talk normally while wearing them. You shouldn’t wear snap-ins if you have problems with your gums or a narrow jawbone, talk to an orthodontist about your suitability before getting any type of removable denture.

IMPLANT-SUPPORTED DENTURES

Implants get positioned in your jawbone and the dentures are then attached to them. This is an implant-supported denture. Implant-supported dentures are more expensive than traditional ones because they require dental implants, but they’re removable and more comfortable. They also don’t need replacing as frequently as other types.

IMMEDIATE DENTURES

Immediate dentures come from a cast of your mouth. They aren't customised to fit you, and they're not ideal for people with gum disease or missing teeth. If you need immediate dentures, it's probably because of tooth loss and the resulting pain or difficulty eating. Immediate dentures are usually worn while your gums heal so that you can eat until they're ready for more permanent replacements.

OVERDENTURES

Dentists choose over-dentures to replace all missing teeth. They’re less expensive than full dentures and more comfortable, making them the most popular choice among people who want to replace their missing teeth. However, over-dentures are less durable than full dentures because they don’t have a supporting base at the bottom of each tooth. Over-dentures also have a higher risk of becoming dislodged if you eat or drink too vigorously or if you grind your teeth during sleep.
